Saving Money

Disability insurance can be a very expensive policy to buy, so make sure that you are not overpaying for your coverage.

Ask your employer or union if they have contracted with an insurance company for discounted premiums. Many employers do contract for long-term disability policies, and this dramatically reduces the cost of the coverage.

Only insure what you absolutely need to insure. Look at your monthly budget. How much income would you need to pay for your basic living expenses? That is the amount to insure.

Choose the proper elimination period. Coordinate the length of the elimination period with how much sick leave you have and how much you keep in your liquid investments.
