How Much in Cash?

Cash investments play an important stabilizing role in your investment planning. Financial experts generally recommend that investors have an emergency fund equal to between three and six months' spending money. Having an adequate emergency reserve allows you to:

  • Deal with inevitable, if unexpected, expenses with mimimal disruption and without needing to go into debt.
  • Take greater risks with the rest of your assets.

As a general rule, park your emergency money where you can access it easily and without penalty. See establishing an emergency reserve fund in the Cash Management Course.
